Public Education and Race: The African American Experience
October 26, 2021 @ 6:00PM — 7:30PM Eastern Time (US & Canada)
Join us for the final part of a series of powerful talks, "Public Education and Race: The African American Experience," that will pique your intellectual curiosity and inspire. Dr. Colin Rose will speak on "The Zone of Proximal Change: Forging More Equitable Schools." The series began with Dr. Jarvis Givens on September 30, on “Fugitive Pedagogy: Carter G. Woodson and the Art of Black Teaching.” Dr. Givens was followed by Dr. Theresa Perry on October 16, on “Looking Back to Look Forward: Towards the Theory and Practice of Achievement for African American Students.” A Zoom link for the event with Dr. Colin Rose will be emailed before the event to everyone who registers.
Dr. Rose will explain how, to effectively implement change, leaders must understand power, its sources and how it is used in context. He will briefly explore the intersections of capital, power and leadership as it relates to forging a more equitable public education system for students of African and Indigenous descent.
He is the creator of the Culturally Responsive Practices Leadership Academy for the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), which works with over 20 superintendents and their leadership teams to systematize culturally responsive practice in districts across the Commonwealth.
